South Charlotte Weekly and its three sister suburban newspapers have been sold to a Texas-based media company.

McElvy Media Group of Houston, led by Jonathan McElvy, will operate the South Charlotte newspaper and companion publications Union County Weekly, Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly and the Pineville Pilot under the umbrella of Charlotte Media Group. About 60,000 copies of the newspapers are distributed free each week.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Alain Lillie founded the company in 2002 and sold four of the group’s other papers – Herald Weekly in Huntersville, Mooresville Weekly, Denver Weekly and Mountain Island Monitor – in 2011 to Craig Moon, former publisher of USA Today.

“It has been a difficult decision to sell the company after a deep personal involvement for many years,” Lillie said in a statement.

McElvy will serve as publisher of the Carolina Weekly Newspapers and Frank Vasquez was named associate publisher. Hannah Chronis was appointed editor of the South Charlotte Weekly, Union County Weekly, Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly and Pineville Pilot. Brent Epling was named business manager, the company said.

McElvy Media owns The Leader community newspaper in north Houston and manages two newspapers in Fort Bend, Texas.
