Restraining order filed against Ch. 9 meteorologist John Ahrens

WSOC (Channel 9) meteorologist John Ahrens was released from jail Monday after being arrested Saturday on a charge of assault on a female during an encounter with his estranged wife.

Ahrens was given a Nov. 3 court date.

“I vehemently deny these charges against me,” said Ahrens. “Right now the most important thing to me is me and my child.”

His wife, Sobrina Driver, said Monday she did not want to comment.

Driver obtained a 10-day domestic violence protective order Monday that prohibits Ahrens from contacting her or seeing their 15-month-old daughter until the court appearance.

In court papers filed Monday, Driver said that she went to pick up the toddler on Saturday as part of their custody arrangement. She said Ahrens threw rocks at her, one of which hit her above the eye and required two stitches.

Ahrens and Driver married in September 2013 and separated in June. They have been in a contentious divorce and a custody dispute since.
