A 23-year-old man died Wednesday when he was struck by a Norfolk-Southern freight train near the 2900 block of West Boulevard, near West Tyvola Road, police said.
Allen Demario Jackson was standing on the tracks shortly after 5:30 p.m. when the southbound train neared and sounded its horn, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Detective Andrew Oberer said.
Jackson hesitated, then he bent over to retrieve a backpack that was beside the tracks, Oberer said.
The train engineer put the train into emergency braking, the officer said, but the train didn’t have time to stop. The front-right corner of the engine struck Jackson, throwing him down an embankment.
Medic pronounced Jackson dead at the scene about 6 p.m.
Jackson had trials pending in Mecklenburg County Superior Court on felony charges of breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering, records show. He had trials pending in Mecklenburg County District Court on misdemeanor charges of assault and battery and resisting a law enforcement officer. All of the charges were from 2014.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Oberer at 704-432-2169.
