Four people were killed in a six-vehicle wreck caused by a speeding, wrong-way driver late Wednesday on Interstate 85 northbound in Spartanburg County, Cpl. Bill Rhyne of the S.C. State Highway Patrol said.
Those injured were taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Rhyne said.
The wreck happened at 11:05 p.m. in Wellford, just south of Spartanburg.
A trooper heading northbound on I-85 Business saw and avoided the wrong-way driver and called the dispatch center to alert other troopers in the area, Rhyne said.
A trooper in the southbound lanes drove parallel to the wrong-way motorist and activated his lights in an unsuccessful attempt to get him to stop, Rhyne said.
Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the victims as Martha Marie Diaz, 21, Josh Leroy Smith, 60, Shiree Lynette Whitaker, 22, and Edwin Ferguson, 27, all of Spartanburg County. Smith was the driver of the speeding car, the office said.
The State Highway Patrol hadn’t released the names of the injured by Thursday afternoon.
