Winthrop notes: Eagles earn Big South Player of Week honors

Recruited as a sharp-shooter three years ago out of Florida, Andre Smith is finally hitting his mark from long distance for the Winthrop men’s basketball team. Smith, a senior guard from Tampa, is shooting 35 percent from behind the arc and averaging 11.5 points per game.

On Feb. 9, Smith’s hot hand earned him the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Co-Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to a 2-0 week. Smith was 9 of 18 from behind the arc and finished with 18 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists against Charleston Southern Feb. 2. Against Liberty Feb. 4, the 5-foot-10 business administration major knocked down 5 of 9 threes for a game-high 21 points.

Smith also became just the fifth player in Winthrop history to make 200 three-pointers in his career. He needs just 26 points to become the school’s 21st player to score 1,000 points in his career.

Williams earns player of the week honors

Erica Williams is becoming the go-to player for the Winthrop women’s basketball team.

The 5-foot-10 sophomore guard from Rex, Ga., averaged 22 points, nine rebounds and nearly six assists in leading the Eagles to wins over Longwood and Charleston Southern during the week of Jan. 26.

Williams was named Big South Player of the Week for her performances.

Against the Longwood Lancers on Jan. 27, Williams recorded her ninth double-double on the season, scoring 18 points and snatching 11 rebounds. She followed that with a season-high 25 points in the Eagles’ win over the Southern Bucs on Jan. 31, going 9-of-14 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

The Eagles host Radford at 7 p.m. on Feb. 17 in the Play for Kay Breast Cancer Awareness game. The game is in remembrance of Kay Yow, the former N.C. State women’s basketball coach who died in 2009. Wear pink and get in free.

Cooper tops in track and field

Winthrop sophomore Marthaline Cooper won the weight throw competition at the Thundering Herd Invitational Jan. 30 at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.

Her throw of 18.81 meters was a facility record and an indoor track record at the school.

For her performance, Cooper was named the Big South Conference Track & Field Athlete of the Week.

Gallagher leads Eagles lacrosse

Scoring goals is nothing new for lacrosse player Shannon Gallagher, especially against Kennesaw State.

A year ago, the 5-foot-10 junior from Silver Spring, Md., scored seven goals against the Owls.

In Winthrop’s opener against Kennesaw State this season, Gallagher scored two goals in the Eagles’ 18-5 win Feb. 10.

Eight Winthrop players scored in the game, including four each by Katie Clark and Abigail Blevins. Danielle Ellis netted three goals.

Gallagher, the preseason Big South Player of the Year, has 98 career goals. Winthrop plays its next six games at home against stiff competition, starting with Ohio State on Feb. 13, George Mason on Feb. 20 and Michigan on Feb. 22.
