Raleigh Charter, Pine Lake’s Marsh shine at state meet

Pine Lake Prep’s Alyssa Marsh won two events at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A state championships Friday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

Pine Lake Prep is a tuition-free K-12 charter school in Mooresville.

Marsh won the 50- freestyle and the 100-butterfly. She also swam on relay teams that finished second and third. She was named meet most outstanding girls swimmer for the second straight season.

Raleigh Charter won its fifth straight girls title with 284 points. Marsh and Pine Lake Prep were second with 222. Lincoln Charter (206) was third and Lake Norman Charter (167.5) was fourth. There were 44 teams scoring.

In the boys meet, Carrboro and Shelby tied for the team title. Lincoln Charter was third.

Area individual girls winners included Christ The King’s Jane Donahue (200 IM); Lincoln Charter’s Christina Lappin (100 free); and Parkwood’s Lexi Souther (100 back). Lincoln Charter (Sophia Bhalla, Kyndall Morrow, Taylor Harkey, Christina Lappin) won the 400 free relay.

Among area boys, Lincoln Charter’s Taylor Powell won the 200 IM.

The 4A swim championship is Saturday and Charlotte Catholic will try for a 15th straight girls state title.
