Man charged in Nov. shooting death in a west Charlotte park

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Saturday charged a man in the Nov. 22 shooting death of Shakeem Ray Dickens of Charlotte in a west Charlotte park.

Joseph Gerell Banks, 23, of Charlotte was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Banks was already in the Mecklenburg County jail on unrelated drug and firearms charges.

Dickens’ body was found shortly after 11:15 a.m. in a park off the 3900 block of Bristol Drive, in the Westerly Hills neighborhood between Wilkinson Boulevard and Ashley Road.

Officers had been called about a person in need of help, and they reported finding a man’s body in the woods nearby. Medic pronounced Dickens dead at the scene.

Police aren’t saying what evidence they gathered that identified Banks as a suspect and led them to obtain warrants for his arrest.

Dickens, 22, was jailed several times since 2013 on charges that included robbery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, resisting a law enforcement officer and possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana, Mecklenburg County jail records show.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 704-432-TIPS (8477) and speak to a homicide unit detective. Or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
