Man eludes arrest after York County police chase of more than 100 mph

A man smashed a car at a Rock Hill motel then fled north on Interstate 77 in a Cadillac Escalade at speeds over 100 mph to escape arrest, police records show.

The chase late Wednesday night started after deputies responded to noise complaints at the Red Roof Inn on Riverview Road. Officers told the man he had to leave the room occupant alone, but the man came back to the motel while police were still there, and smashed a car with his SUV as deputies tried to detain him for trespassing.

The driver jumped a curb with police in pursuit, then sped toward the nearby Interstate 77 exit on Celanese Road where the SUV ran a red light in heavy traffic, almost causing a collision with other vehicles, the report states.

The SUV headed north on I-77 at speeds that reached more than 100 mph before sheriff’s office supervisors told deputies to break off the pursuit when the vehicle reached the state line.
