Marvin Ridge won the boys’ and girls’ N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state championships for the second year in a row Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
The Mavericks boys won easily. The Marvin Ridge girls won by five points over Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons.
In 4A, Hope Mills South View won the boys team title among 48 teams. Winston-Salem Parkland won its second straight 4A girls state title in a 43-team field.
In the 3A boys’ race, Marvin Ridge scored 96 points with Asheville second with 60 points. Weddington was third.
Marvin Ridge’s Christopher Garrick jumped 6-11 in the high jump, breaking a six-year-old record. In 3A girls, Marvin Ridge had 67 points, Cardinal Gibbons 62.
Marvin Ridge got individual girls’ state championships from Ngozi Frances Obuseh (shot put) and Alexa King (1600 meters).
• Area 3A boys’ individual winners included Marvin Ridge’s Julian Gaines (long jump); Ashbrook’s Tyson Fortenberry (shot put); Weddington’s 800 meter relay (Matthew Conner, Ryan Hobbs, Alex Hazan, Mitchell Resor); Sun Valley’s Kadarius Lotharp (Sun Valley).
• Area 3A girls’ individual winners included Statesville’s Cambria Shuford (500 meters) and Weddington’s girls 1,600-meter relay (Maria Sanchez, Morgan Garrett, Jessica Sommers, Cyan Mercer).
• Area 4A boys’ individual winners included Mallard Creek’s Keon Howe (high jump) and North Meck’s 800-meter relay team (Mynez Nicholson, Ishaq Smith, Deallen Hargrove, Vincent Crisp).
• Area 4A girls’ individual winners included Olympic’s Khayla Dawson (shot put).
