College Baseball Roundup: Gardner-Webb coach Rusty Stroupe gets 700th win

Sam Fulginiti hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give Gardner-Webb the lead for good Sunday in a 6-3 win against Buffalo, which gave coach Rusty Stroupe the 700th win of his career.

Stroupe, who is in his 25th season as a college head coach, improved to 700-542-2 with stops at North Greenville, Brevard, Lander and Gardner-Webb. A Cherryville native, he is in his 14th season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs (3-1).

Mitch Warner earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief, limiting the Bulls (0-3) to one hit and striking out three.


Duke 12, California 7: The visiting Blue Devils scored five runs in a decisive eighth inning to win the series.

Reliever Nick Hendrix earned the win for Duke (2-1), allowing three hits, one run and striking out one.

The Golden Bears are 1-2.

West Virginia 6, Clemson 1: The visiting Mountaineers (2-1) scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning to win the three-game series.

Brody Koerner took the loss despite allowing one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in four innings for the Tigers (1-2).

Big South

Presbyterian 2, Delaware State 1: The host Blue Hose scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to sweep the four-game series.

Jay Lizanich delivered the winning single for Presbyterian (4-0).

Delaware State fell to 0-4.


Wofford 9, Dayton 7: Alec Paradowski had three hits and three RBIs to lead the host Terriers (3-0) to a series sweep.

Dayton is 0-3.


Davidson, Villanova game canceled: Cold weather forced Sunday’s game to be canceled. The game was to be played at N.C. State.
