A 17-year-old was killed early Saturday morning in a hit and run crash near a popular camping area north of Statesville, authorities said.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said James Michael Lutz of Stanley was struck and killed by driver who lost control of his vehicle on Love Valley Road. James Dean Harmon, 40, was arrested on charges of DWI, driving without an operator's license, felony hit and run and second degree murder. He was being held in the Iredell County Jail on $500,000 bond.
N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Crouse said he was at another accident site when he noted a speeding vehicle with a broken window go by. Crouse said he pursued the vehicle and stopped Harmon for questioning about the window. Harmon said he had hit a deer, Crouse said.
While question Harmon, Crouse said Iredell authorities announced a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian. Crouse then placed Harmon in custody. Crouse said Lutz was in the area camping with friends and family.
