Back-to-school shoppers can grab an extra alarm clock to help bost attendance in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Gwen Forney, a retired social worker, is holding a kickoff for her new group, Bright Hopes, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Grady Cole Center, 310 N. Kings Drive. The goal is to get CMS students to commit to cutting their absences in half compared with last year.

To motivate them – and help low-income parents who may struggle to get their kids on the school bus – she's seeking donations of alarm clocks and other school supplies. She's also seeking youth choirs and volunteers from houses of worship and other groups interested in the get-kids-to-school drive.
