Five injured in northwest Charlotte shooting

Five people, including a 2-year-old boy, were shot late Saturday in northwest Charlotte and were taken to Carolinas Medical Center – at least one with serious injuries.

Charlotte police said the five were sitting on a patio at a Thomasboro Drive apartment complex when a black male in dreadlocks – dressed in all-black – rounded a corner, yelled something and fired a shotgun, the Observer's TV news partner, WCNC TV, reported.

All the victims were taken to CMC. The boy was shot in the foot and a victim with serious injuries was alert, police said.

The victims told police they didn't know the suspect. One of the victims returned fire at the suspect, but no one knows if he was hit, police said.

Charlotte firefighters, responding to the incident, told police they saw the suspect running through the complex near Freedom Drive and Interstate 85. A police helicopter and search dogs tracked the suspect to Thomasboro, but his trail stopped there.

Police were uncertain of a motive.

Detectives were still investigating the incident late this morning and the victims' identities hadn't been released. If you have any information, call the homicide division at 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
