Gastonia Police today identified a 6-year-old boy who drowned Friday in a backyard swimming pool as Grayson Sherell of Kernersville.
Grayson was playing in the backyard of his grandparents, Robert and Betty Saunders of Gastonia, when he wandered off, police said. In three or four minutes, the grandparents realized he was gone and began looking for him. After several minutes of searching unsuccessfully, they called police.

While the search was being conducted, a neighbor arrived home and found the boy in the pool and began CPR, police said. Officers and emergency personnel arrived at the scene and the victim was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation is under way, but police said based on initial findings, the incident appears to be accidental.
