The unit was started in 2005 to apprehend robbery suspects. The department uses the unit to track down and arrest some of the most violent suspects in Mecklenburg, including 41 murder suspects since 2006.
In 2007, the unit's name was changed to the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and the department started featuring the unit more prominently to aid investigations. The unit has a prominent spot on the police department's home page and its own tipline, 704-336-8228.
