UNC Chapel Hill is one of the nation's greenest universities, the National Wildlife Federation said today in a ranking of environmental friendliness.

Fourteen other N.C. schools and four in South Carolina also got nods for their sustainability programs, including Salisbury's Catawba College and Appalachian State University.

The wildlife group hailed UNC's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while supporting renewable energy, public transportation and energy efficiency. The school's academic offerings include a minor in sustainability, the concept of meeting needs now without compromising the needs of future generations.

Other N.C. schools recognized: Brunswick Community College; Davidson County Community College; Duke University; Elon University; Halifax Community College; Methodist University; Montreat College; Robeson Community College; UNC Pembroke; Wake Technical Community College; Warren Wilson College; Wilson Technical Community College.

S.C. schools: Furman University; Medical University of South Carolina; Piedmont Technical College; University of South Carolina.
