Huntersville police are expected to release more details today about the discovery of a body on or near Interstate 77 on Tuesday night.
The discovery and subsequent investigation caused authorities to close a five-mile section of northbound I-77 for three hours.
That, in turn, created a massive traffic backup.
Initial reports indicated a person had been killed in a traffic wreck on I-77, but later police reports indicate a woman's body was discovered along the highway, in the area near Hambright Road.
Authorities closed I-77 about 8:20 p.m. at Exit 18 (Sunset Road), detouring traffic off the interstate to Exit 23 (Gilead Road) in Huntersville. Police reopened I-77 after 11:30 p.m., but no additional details have been disclosed about exactly what happened.
