43 CMS Merit scholars named

The National Merit Scholarship program has named 43 Charlotte-Mecklenburg students as 2009 semifinalists.

These high school seniors are among 16,000 students across the country who will compete for Merit Scholarship awards totaling more than $35 million. The semifinalists were picked on the basis of their 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores.

The semifinalists are:

Ardrey Kell: Katrina Reynolds; Meredith Richmond; Jessica Walsh O'Sullivan.

East Mecklenburg: Catherine Trobich.

Myers Park: Jillian Becker; Kevin Blackwell; Kyle Bowen; Laura Carpenter; Tyler Fitch; Daniel Gaspari; Allison Hargett; Rebecca Jeffries; Jacqueline McNeill; Rachel Myrick; Suman Sivasubramania; Vignesh Sivasubramania; Kathryn Stewart; Andrew Thomason; Nolan Williams; Bo-Tsung Xiang.

North Mecklenburg: Emily Baker; Alyssa Botelho; Kelsey Ellis; Teresa Portone; Krista White; Brecia Young.

Northwest School of the Arts: Claire Archer.

Renaissance School at Olympic: Jacklyn Ngo.
