Kelly Santore, a sophomore at UNC Charlotte, just completed her fifth annual shoe drive. A few weeks ago, I wrote that she was beginning the annual project. Now it's complete with much success.
The shoe drive allows donated shoes to be distributed to needy school-age children in the Biscoe community in Montgomery County.
Kelly, who is from Stallings, collects the shoes in time to allow the children to have new shoes near the beginning of the school year. “Because I love shoes, and I know how important it was for me to have a new pair at the start of each year, I decided to collect them in the summer,” she says.
Kelly is studying to be an elementary school teacher and says the annual project prepares her for her future career.

She uses public speaking to answer questions, uses organizational skills to put shoes and socks together by sizes, and creativity to advertise her project with posters and bulletins at her church, St. John Newmann Catholic Church in Charlotte.
Most donations come from members of her church. But many in the Indian Trail/Stallings area have contributed over the years. Last year, an anonymous Good Samaritan from Indian Trail donated more than 100 pairs to Kelly's shoe drive.
More than 200 pairs of shoes were collected this year, as well as lots of packages of socks. Kelly added socks to her shoe drive two years ago. She plans to continue the drive next summer.
“I know that the children of the Biscoe community have greatly appreciated the shoes,” she says. “I cannot disappoint them in the future.”
Golf tournament fundraiser
Fifty-four golfers took part in the fourth annual Porter Ridge Athletic Booster Club golf tournament. This year's tournament was held at Emerald Lake golf course in Stallings on Aug. 24 – a day before the first day of school. Tony Pascarella, co-chairman for the tournament, said the final tally for the event looks like they made $5,000 for the athletic booster club.
Volunteers are needed to help organize next year's tournament. Information can be found on the athletic booster club web site: www.PorterRidgeabc.org.
