Step boldly into fall fashion

Chicago Tribune

Bold prints in bright colors pop off black. Long scarves float over short dresses. Masculine vests team with feminine blouses and flirty skirts.

This fall promises to be a season of contrasts.

Key colors are purple, red and somber grays. Pants are skinny or wide. Shoes sport towering heels or are sensibly flat. And oversized accessories add drama to sleek dresses and trim jackets.

So forget pastel shades, mid-heel shoes and delicate jewelry. Shelve those skirts that hover somewhere between the knee and ankle. Push those straight-leg pants to the back of your closet.

This is not a season for the faint of heart or indecisive. It's a time to make a bold fashion statement with a few striking looks. To get you started, here's a listing of a dozen top trends:

1. Trim jackets.

2. Short skirts.

3. One-shoulder dresses.

4. Full trousers with high waistbands.

5. Bright colors, metallics.

6. Menswear fabrics, ombre shadings.

7. Ruffles, feathers, fringe, bows.

8. Belts, wide and narrow.

9. Oversized handbags, sleek clutches.

10. Berets, fedoras, derbies.

11. Platform pump, booties, flats.

12. Chunky jewelry, dramatic scarves.
