Actor's Theatre among big winners at awards ceremony

Actor's Theatre of Charlotte won Theatre Company of the Year, and its productions “The Scene” and “The Pillowman” were named best comedy and best drama at the Metrolina Theatre Association's annual awards presentation last Sunday.

The awards, which recognize excellence in local theater during the 2007-08 season, were voted on by MTA members and include many artistic and technical categories.

Comedy

Production: “The Scene” – Actor's Theatre of Charlotte.

Performance by a Lead Actor/Male: Brian Robinson (Charlie) in “The Scene.”

Performance by a Lead Actor/Female: Annette Gill (Mattie Rigsbee) in “Walking Across Egypt.”

Direction: Ann Marie Costa for “The Scene.”

Drama

Production: “The Pillowman” – Actor's Theatre of Charlotte.

Performance by a Lead Actor/Male: Billy Ensley (Katurian) in “The Pillowman.”

Performance by a Lead Actor/Female: Karen Abercrombie (Aunt Ester) in “Gem of the Ocean” – Actor's Theatre of Charlotte.

Direction: Dennis Delamar in “The Pillowman.”

Musical

Original Musical (tie): “A Mad, Mad Madrigal” and “A Midsummer Night's Musical” – both by Epic Arts Repertory Theatre.

Production: “Crazy for You” – Central Piedmont Community College Summer Theatre.

Performance by a Lead Actor/Male: Nic Bryan (Bobby Child) in “Crazy for You.”

Performance by a Lead Actor/Female: Susan Roberts Knowlson (Annie Oakley) in “Annie Get Your Gun” – Central Piedmont Community College Summer Theatre.

Direction: James Yost for “Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical” – BareBones Theatre Group.
