The Charlotte Civil Service Board began a hearing today to determine whether Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Maj. Chuck Johnson, accused of excessive use of force, will be demoted.
Johnson, a 26-year police veteran, was working off-duty during the Food Lion Speed Street festival uptown in May when the incident happened. He was placed on administrative duty, and Chief Rodney Monroe recommended to the board that Johnson be suspended and demoted. Johnson, who was working in internal affairs, has been reassigned to the watch commander's office, said Internal Affairs Director Capt. Chuck Adkins.
The board may reach a decision Tuesday, Adkins said. The hearing is closed. Johnson could have requested it be open to the public but did not.
