Police took two men into custody overnight atop the roof of a south Charlotte business building, interrupting what investigators say was a copper theft.
The men were spotted by a witness who called police and said he saw several people atop the roof of the Home Depot store, in the 4700 block of South Boulevard, south of Woodlawn Road.
Police say that when they arrived, they saw the men on the roof but couldn’t reach them. So CMPD called the Charlotte Fire Department, which supplied a ladder truck. Officers climbed onto the roof and apprehended two men.
Investigators said they found a vehicle nearby that they believe was driven by a third person involved in the case. That person remains at large.
Police say they believe the men were taking copper tubing from air conditioning units, with plans to sell the copper for its scrap value.
