Pineville

Christmas event: Harrison United Methodist Church will hold "Sights, Sounds and Smells of Christmas" at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8, 15 and 22 at the church's Hammill Hall. On Dec. 8, the event will begin with "Sights of Christmas" as families come together to enjoy Christmas movies and dialogue. The event will continue Dec. 15 with the "Sounds of Christmas" as participants go caroling in a local neighborhood. On Dec. 22, the "Smells of Christmas" ends the event with a potluck covered-dish dinner. The event is free and child care will be provided. Details: 704-541-3463.

Covenant Day School

Serving others: On Dec. 9 and 20, the middle school students at Covenant Day School will participate in "Doulos Day," where they will serve others.

The eighth-grade students will pack donated shoebox gifts at Samaritan's Purse. The school collected more than 400 shoeboxes to be filled.

Sixth- and seventh-grade students will serve Samaritan's Feet, a ministry of Samaritan's Purse, where they will lace hundreds of pairs of shoes to be donated to children in need. Details: 704-847-2385.

Charlotte Latin

Hunger drive: Charlotte Latin participated in a schoolwide Thanksgiving service project. The school raised $4,056 and more than 6,452 cans of food for Loaves & Fishes, which serves more than 100,000 people in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.

Students held a bake sale, "can-raisers," a hunger simulation and more to meet their goals.
