Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The museum is closed Mondays.

Activities: From ancient Egyptian artifacts to European Old Master paintings, guests will be exposed to a variety of cultural artworks. The West Building at the museum is home to the museum's permanent collection, while the East Building houses special exhibitions for guests to explore. In the East Building, through Jan. 30, visitors can view "American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell." For this event, adult tickets cost $15 and seniors, students, military and groups of 10 or more cost $12. Members and children 6 and younger are free. Guests can tour the 164-acre Museum Park, which is a trail system that leads visitors through natural areas and to commissioned works of art. Guests are welcome to bring their lunch and picnic in the park, or the museum also provides meals at The Museum Restaurant. The restaurant is open 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; 5:30-10 p.m. Friday; and 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Cost: Admission to the museum's permanent collection and Museum Park is free. However, there is a charge for some special exhibitions and programs.

Directions from uptown: I-85 N. toward Greensboro. Slight right at I-85 BUS N./U.S.-29 N/U.S.-70 E. (signs for I-40 BUS/Greensboro). Continue to follow I-85 BUS N. Continue onto I-40 E. Slight right at Raleigh Chapel-Hill Expressway. (signs for I-440/U.S.-1 N./Wade Ave). Take the Blue Ridge Road exit. Turn left at Blue Ridge Road. Turn right at Reedy Creek Road. Turn right.

Distance from Charlotte: About two and a half hours.
