Scenes from the 2014 OrthoCarolina Classic

The OrthoCarolina Classic 10K and 5K race took place on Saturday, August 23 and the team from Run Charlotte Run was there in full force.

Resident newbie Ted ran his first 5K and can't wait to share his experience with you later this week. Logistics guru Blair began his morning at 5:30 a.m. to get set up and ready for the runners and he went non-stop until the last runner crossed the finish line. And I participated in the 5K race and was thrilled to not only achieve a new personal record but to finish as the second place female.

It was a great race day for Team Run Charlotte Run!

Events kicked off at 7:30 a.m. with the 5K and the 10K started shortly after at 7:45 a.m. It was a nice morning for the race with overcast skies and temperatures in the 70s. The humidity was killer but everyone powered through. The course was challenging but provided a nice mix of up and downhills.

I asked race participants what they thought of the course and collected video responses. The most common feedback I heard from runners about the course was how it ended with an uphill climb to the finish. Some thought that was mean, some thought it was pretty awesome.

We had a good crowd stick around after the race to cheer on those who were still out on the course and to celebrate their accomplishments. Post-race festivities included Chick-Fil-A biscuits, beer from NoDa Brewing Company, various vendors and expo booths and an entertaining kid's 50 yard dash.

When asked what kept them motivated out on the course responses ranged from "free beer at the end" to "beating my PR " to "prepping for a fall marathon." Whether there to party or to win, it was a successful and fun day for everyone!
