It's time for the Weekend Run + Refuel. Each week we provide you with a new local running route along with a suggestion on where to grab brunch or lunch after.
Since it's a holiday weekend, I thought it would be fun to send you on an adventure out to the U.S. National Whitewater Center for some trail running. Located a short drive from Charlotte, the Whitewater Center offers whitewater rafting, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, rock climbing, zip lines, ropes courses and 25+ miles of trails for mountain biking and running. There is also a great restaurant onsite that overlooks the whitewater and serves a selection of food, beer and wine.
In addition to all of their usual offerings, the Whitewater Center will host a trail race as well as outdoor concerts/festivals as part of their Labor Day Weekend Celebration.
The race takes place on Sunday, August 31 at 9 a.m. with 5K and 15K distance options. Race day registration is available. Get all the details here.
There will be a free concert on Saturday night from 7-10 p.m. The Labor Day celebration will take place on Sunday with live music all day and into the evening. There will be a fireworks show at the end of the evening. Get more details on the USNWC's events page.
I love the Whitewater Center and definitely encourage everyone to check it out this weekend. Whether you go hit the trails on your own or run the race (or just go for the concerts and beer), you're sure to have a great time! The Whitewater Center is dog friendly so bring your pup along for some exercise and entertainment too! Bring $5 for parking/day pass. There are trail maps available onsite.
The River's Edge Bar and Grill is a must try while you're visiting. They offer a selection of healthy and fresh foods such as hummus plates, sandwiches, salads and more. They have plenty of kid-friendly and vegetarian options. They also feature a wide selection of craft and local beers.
Wishing everyone a happy Labor Day weekend and happy running!
