Barbecue event generates food, money for hunger

Saturday’s annual Butts and Bluegrass Barbecue festival in Clover generated 300 pounds of food and a $1,000 donation to battle hunger in the Clover area.

Donations to go the Clover Area Assistance Center.

Organizer Lisa Thornburg, who started the event three years ago at Clover Community Park, said winners of the barbecue competition, judged by the South Carolina Barbeque Association, were named in butt, ribs and brisket.

They are:

•  Butt: First, Backwoods Bar-b-que, Trenton; second, Doko Smoke, Blythewood.

•  Ribs: First, Backwoods Bar-b-que, Trenton; second, Ledyard Bar-b-que, Summerville.

•  Brisket: First, Ultimate Tailgaters BBQ, Columbia; second, Twinvittles BBQ, Gastonia, N.C.

•  People’s choice award: Clover Firehouse BBQ.

Festival-goers brought nonperishable food donations to benefit CACC, and $1,000 in proceeds from the gate admissions also will be donated to the agency’s food bank, Thornburg said.

The event also included vendors, children’s events, a silent auction, a cake walk, 5K run and motorcycle show and free health screenings.
