Rolling Thunder to wave flags on York County I-77 bridges Thursday on 9-11 anniversary

The Rolling Thunder veterans advocacy organization and others will wave American flags from several York County bridges over Interstate 77 Thursday on the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Volunteers will wave flags from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.

The public is invited to participate, said Harvey Mayhill, a Rolling Thunder member. Groups will gather at the Home Depot parking lot on North Cherry Road at 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to depart for the bridges.

The flag waving started in 2001 with the late Leonard Farrington of Rock Hill. A World War II veteran, Farrington waved from the Sutton Road bridge over Interstate 77 for several years before his death. The Sutton Road bridge at Exit 83 was named last year by the S.C. Legislature and governor the Patriot Leonard A. Farrington memorial bridge.
