Ron Massey, who coached high school football at Piedmont, A.L. Brown and Kings Mountain, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday.
Massey, 56, was hired as Piedmont’s head coach in March 2012. This was his third season. Massey coached in Piedmont’s 74-58 loss to Sun Valley Friday. Piedmont is 3-4 this season. It was 8-3 in 2013 and 5-7 in 2012 under Massey.
Massey, 58, had a 120-32 record at A.L. Brown, where his teams won or tied for nine conference championships in his 11 seasons. His 2008 team at Kannapolis reached the N.C. 3AA state finals. Prior to Brown, Massey was head coach at Kings Mountain or five years starting in 1995. His teams were 48-15-2.
Massey also was head football coach at Fayetteville’s 71st high school from 1992-94. His teams were 32-14. Massey began his coaching career in 1988 at Raleigh Enloe. His career coaching record is 221-101-3.
