Center City Literary Festival

Enjoy a weekend of literary greats. On Friday, James Grymes, author of “Violins of Hope,” will read as violinists perform. Also that evening: poet Christopher Davis, mystery novelist Mark de Castrique, essayist Sandra Govan and poet Grace Ocasio. Saturday the festival will focus on kids with hands-on activities featuring Caldecott Medal-winning children’s author Gail Haley and her writing partner, Alice Phoebe Naylor. The festival concludes with a family-friendly performance by the UNC Charlotte Chamber Orchestra.
Free tickets to Kelly Clarkson

Be among the first 1,500 people in line at the grand opening of the new Microsoft retail store at SouthPark mall and get two tickets to the Kelly Clarkson concert Sunday at Symphony Park. The store, in the mall’s Nordstrom wing, will have a ribbon-cutting at 10:30 a.m. (It might be wise to show up early to get in line.) The first 1,500 people will also have a chance to win one of 100 tickets to a meet-and-greet with Clarkson. For Sunday’s concert, lines open at Symphony Park at noon, gates open at 2 and the concert starts at 4.

Bands Blue Monday, Knowne Ghost and Simplified will perform at the amphitheater. Local beer from D9 Brewing Company will be available, along with food from these trucks: Juan Taco Truck, Masterbacon, Cuzzo’s Cuisine Food Truck, Imperial Sandwich Co., Two Chicks and A Truck and The Twisted Farmer. This celebration from Cornelius Park and Rec and Bella Love Inc. will benefit The Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists.
Pineville Fall Festival

Admission is free, but there’s a charge for the carnival rides. Live music will be provided by Too Much Sylvia, The Hinson Girls, QuasiMojo, Radiojacks, Emily Minor and On the Border. There will also be jugglers, clowns, a children’s art show, food and a dog Frisbee show.
Blakeney Boo Bash

This free Halloween celebration includes pumpkin painting, sand art, wax hands, slides, moon bounce, swing, train rides and live DJ. A dog costume contest benefits Hope for All Dogs and costs $5 to enter.
