Clover opens disc golf course

Leaders Monday celebrated the opening of the town’s first disc golf course at Clover Community Park, saying plans for more courses are in the works.

Recreation director Greg Holmes said the nine-hole, par 3 course which begins just off the park’s main parking area is free for use by residents and visitors.

“Disc golf is a fast-growing sport,” Holmes said. “It’s not as expensive as golf. I think anybody could play disc golf.”

Holmes said the town plans an 18-hole disc golf course at New Centre Park that will connect with the existing course at Clover Community Park.

Another nine-hole course is also planned at Roosevelt Park, he said. No schedule has been set for the opening of those courses, he said.

“It’s become very popular,” Clover Mayor Donnie Grice said about the sport. “We are glad to be one of the first (courses) around here.”

The new course, which was finished late this summer, has been getting steady play for several months without any effort to promote it, said park superintendent Scott Moses.

“We’ve had several players a day in the summer,” Moses said. “For people not knowing about it, it’s getting lots of play.”

Holmes said the town decided to hold an official opening to bring more attention to the course and to the town’s plans.

Holmes said the course was designed by Innova Disc Golf.

He said the town spent about $4,500 for the disc golf targets, tee signs and design services in June 2012. The course required additional clearing that cost $3,000 in 2013.

Adam Stewart of Filbert and George Wingard of Clover, who were playing on the course Monday, said they have been playing there for months.

Both say they play at courses across the region. “It’s a good course,” Stewart said of the Clover course. “I would like to see more holes.”

Wingard also said the players would like to see some disc golf events planned for the area.

Holmes said Clover doesn’t have a disc golf club, like those in other York County communities, but that town leaders want to encourage the formation of such a group.
