Salisbury officials say an 8-year-old boy died in the hospital Sunday afternoon after falling through the ice of a Rowan County pond.
The drowning call came in at 2:38 p.m. According to Salisbury police, three boys were playing near the pond at Hurley Park when a boy walked out onto the icy lake and the ice broke.
Authorities say he was under water for about 10 minutes before being pulled out by firefighters in a raft.
The boy was taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center to be treated, but passed away just after 4 p.m.
