A head-on collision blocked the eastbound lanes on a interstate in Burke County early Thursday morning.
Highway Patrol says 81-year-old Ruth Johnson Whisnant was driving the wrong way around 3:40 a.m. on Interstate 40 east, near exit 103 in Morganton, when she collided with another car.
Troopers believe heavy fog in the area may have been a factor in the crash.
Officials said there were injuries in the crash, but the severity of the injuries has not been released.
