Construction to bring 800 homes on Lake Wylie underway

McLean, a 670-acre Belmont development that dips across the state line into Lake Wylie, is under construction and will bring 800 homes.

The former Daniel Stowe estate, McLean sits adjacent to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. It will feature three neighborhoods, a marina, commercial development and a public park.

Belmont City Council voted in November 2013 to annex 997 acres, including the acreage for McLean. Leaders at the time said the project would have a regional impact that would help transform Belmont and the property along Lake Wylie.

“It will change the character of Belmont, hopefully, in a very positive way and for a long time to come,” Mayor Richard Boyce said then”

Steven Hinshaw, principal with NW Lake Wylie, helped orchestrate the rezoning. NW Lake Wylie and Northwood Investors will serve as developers.

“This is a special piece of property with an incredible legacy and breadth of natural amenities,” Hinshaw said.

McLean will have single-family homes on estate and waterfront sites, and patio homes. South Shore will be the first neighborhood to take form, and will include most of the lakefront offerings in McLean.

“Our intent is to develop it in a manner respectful of its beauty, creating neighborhoods and homes fitting to this environment,” Hinshaw said.

While the majority of McLean is in Belmont, a lakefront stretch of about 30 acres in South Carolina is only accessible by water or by North Carolina roads. That property already was zoned for homes.

McLean takes its name from the John D. McLean family, property owners before Stowe. The McLeans owned it from 1848 to 1930 and built a home there that will serve as a sales and information center beginning this spring.

Each of the three neighborhoods will have a community center, with a swimming pool complex. Developers will deed 10 acres to Belmont for a public park.

“Close proximity to metropolitan Charlotte and Charlotte Douglas International Airport is a huge plus,” Hinshaw said. “But McLean’s greatest asset is a vast shoreline that offers opportunities for residents to enjoy an incredible trail system near water, fishing, kayaking and boating.

“An existing marina adjacent to the site and another marina planned at the New Hope Road bridge will provide ready access to the lake,” he added.

The property has been rezoned and annexed into Belmont since Northwood purchased it in August 2013.

The specific custom and neighborhood homebuilders will be announced soon.
