Carolina Bride

From frat party to forever

Sarah Loftus first met Richard Bisher, known to friends and family as JR, at fraternity-sorority cocktail party during homecoming week at their alma mater, Ohio University. To Sarah, it was the unlikeliest of places to meet the man she would eventually marry. "Little did I know that amidst all of my best girlfriends, coolers filled with cheap cans of beer and numerous bottles of champagne, I would meet my future husband." The two exchanged phone numbers and randomly ran into each other but didn't realize they wanted to make their relationship exclusive until after a long winter break away from school and each other. After JR graduated from college and Sarah accepted a teaching position, the two relocated to Charlotte to begin their new life together. While Sarah has since gone back to school for a career in nursing, back in 2009 she was teaching middle school. One evening after a long day of work she hurried home to begin packing for a trip back to Ohio the next morning. It was the last day of school before the holiday break and the last day she would be just JR's girlfriend. The scene was set. The lights were dimmed, the warm glow of candlelight filled the house, soft music played in the background and rose petals were everywhere. JR gently guided Sarah into the bedroom where rose petals spelled out exactly what he wanted to say: "Marry me!" Sarah spun around and found him down on one knee, offering a ring from Diamonds Direct, especially for her. "Of course I said 'yes'!" The date was set for Oct. 23 and the couple's friends and family were excited to escape the winter weather and take a trip down south. Sarah and JR worked together to put together the outfits for the entire wedding party. The bride chose a vintage-inspired, one-shoulder ball gown with a sweeping train with hints of feathers and jewels throughout her ensemble. Details also included numerous handmade items from Etsy, like the bridal party's necklaces and jeweled feather hair clips, the flower girl's dress and pinwheels made from sheet music that were used as part of the centerpieces to give their wedding a unique look. The couple’s reception was filled with the glow of candles, just like the night JR proposed. Party Reflections provided seating accommodations for the 120 guests and Lindsey Lee Photography captured all of the precious moments of their wedding day. As Sarah locked eyes with her groom that day, she remembered just how far they had come together. Getting through school, moving away from their families and overcoming the loss of family members – Sarah's father and JR's half-sister – had brought them that much closer. Celebrating a wedding was the "icing on the cake" for the couple and all of the family and friends who had watched them grow together. “To see JR all dressed up at the end of that aisle made my heart melt,” says Sarah. “We spent so much time on the dance floor and really cherished seeing all of our family and friends enjoy themselves.”
