Luck is defined as the force that seems to operate for good in a person's life, as in shaping circumstances, events, or opportunities. For Katie Hill and Matthew Cole, a chance meeting during their freshman year of college later proved to be a little more than luck and a lot like destiny. The two were friends who parted ways when Matt joined the Marines. Several years later Katie decided to call Matt out of the blue. Leaving a brief message and the rest to chance, Katie didn’t know that Matt was overseas in Afghanistan at the time. She also didn’t predict that hers was the first call he would return when he arrived home. Soon Matt and Katie were a long-distance couple spending hours at a time on the phone at night. It wasn’t long after Matt’s move to Hawaii that he asked Katie to join him. “I knew we had a wonderful relationship over the phone, so I couldn’t wait for her to move to Hawaii.” Matt says. “The minute I saw her step off the plane, I knew this was something special.” Katie shares, “It was the time of our lives! We were thankful to have some of Matt’s family close by, but ultimately it was a time for us to grow as a couple away from it all in a magical place.”Matt knew Katie was “the one” and decided to propose in front of family during Christmas. Aware of Katie’s extreme love for the holidays and even larger love for her family, he knew this time would be perfect. Katie remembers, “Everyone finished opening their presents and Matt said he had one more to give. As he got down on one knee, the entire family surrounded us taking pictures, video, clapping and crying. Everyone I love was able to witness this magical moment.”The couple’s wedding theme happened by chance – or luck, as you would have it. As Matt and Katie planned the wedding around things they loved as well as Katie’s Irish background, luck seemed to be a continuous theme. And although they did not plan it this way, they wouldn’t change a thing. The morning of their wedding, heavy rain – usually a sign of good luck – cleared just in time for the ceremony. The couple’s bridal party walked down the aisle to “Lucky” by Jason Mraz. Woven throughout Matt’s emotional vows, he asked his bride dressed in her Alvina Valenta gown from J. Major’s, “How did I get so lucky?” Before their vows were over, a strong wind swept through the lawn of River Hills Country Club, a sign of good fortune in Hawaii. The Irish Blessing was read as the couple was announced for the first time as husband and wife, while Indigo Photography captured every moment. The fun-loving bride stayed on the dance floor all night, encouraging her groom and guests to keep the party going. Matt and Katie both agree the biggest hit of the evening was the photo booth where guests could leave a message of well wishes and photos for the bride and groom in place of a formal registry.Later, guests received small horseshoes as favors to be hung over their doors for good luck and attached to the gift, a note that read, “We are lucky to have you in our lives.” Katie says, “Even with over 200 family and friends around us, the day was an intimate affair. We wanted everyone to have as much fun as possible while celebrating in a laid-back atmosphere.” Lucky for the newlyweds, they got everything they wanted.
