Like many brides, Emily Welton had been dreaming of her wedding since she was a girl. What sets her apart, however, was her ability to retain that childlike joy and infuse it into every aspect of her wedding. Perhaps it’s because she’s a preschool teacher, always surrounded by children. Or perhaps it’s because 17 kids were on her guest list. Whatever the inspiration, it translated into a special day that achieved a delicate balance between sophistication and fun.
When Emily and fiancé Kris Mularz envisioned their wedding, they wanted a day that would leave a lasting impression on their guests. The couple knew they had found the perfect venue after stumbling upon Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock, NC. It had the rustic charm they were looking for, and the feel of a destination wedding for their out-of-state families.
The teacher in Emily couldn’t wait to get started on the details. She selected a palette of navy, light green, and bright pink. “At first I was going to go with the blush and neutral trend,” she says, “but these colors were so much fun!” The vibrant colors showed up everywhere—from the patterned textiles on the tables and the floral arrangements to the whimsical programs. Children’s activity bags kept the tiniest guests happy, and kids and adults alike were thrilled to find a table filled with brightly-colored candies and cake pops.
What stands out most to Emily and Kris was being able to celebrate with all of their loved ones. “I’m normally a little high-strung when it comes to these kinds of things, but I was truly able to sit back and savor each moment,” Emily says. The event had been just as she’d hoped; it delighted all her guests and surpassed even her girlhood dreams.
