On Feb. 14 the Hilton Charlotte Center City was turned into a Brazilian and Mardi Gras-style celebration for Carnival Charlotte. Several hundred guests gathered to raise money to support Latino students and help Latina women attend college through the educational and scholarship programs of the nonprofit Latin American Women’s Association.

The evening included silent and live auctions, dancers and a Cuban band. A highlight was an award given to one of Charlotte’s most beloved longtime volunteers, Carmen Hilton. For more than two decades, Hilton, a native of Barcelona, Spain, has volunteered to help in many ways, from aiding those needing food and shelter to mentoring students and promoting the arts.
