Belk brings back its designer contest

After a year off, Belk is bringing back its Southern Designer Showcase for 2015. That’s a competition in which designers vie to get a collection into Belk stores and online; this year’s winners’ work will show up in spring 2016.

Designers of women’s, men’s or kids’ apparel, shoes or women’s accessories – who either live in the South “or have a strong connection to the region” – face a Feb. 2 deadline, and must submit at least 10 photos of actual products (not drawings), plus a bio (you must be at least 18), at belkdesigncontest.com. The first competition, in 2012, drew some 300 entries; store executives narrowed the list to about 35 and 15 winners were chosen. Last year’s was tighter, with 12 winners. This year’s will be named in mid-May.

So that’s for spring 2016. What’s for this spring, as we stare at cloudy January skies? Arlene Goldstein, vice president of trend merchandising and fashion direction for the store, offered the accompanying trending list this week. CLT_Style will share more predictions as they come in.
