What's up with the Trader Joe's store in the Metropolitan retail center near Uptown?
A spokesperson for the California-based retail food store said today that the store, Charlotte's third but the first in the center city, is scheduled to open Oct. 10, the first time the company has confirmed an opening date. But she emphasized the October date is only the scheduled date and could change. In new construction, she said, there can always be delays.
The new store will be 13,100 square feet, slightly larger than the 12,000-square-foot store on Rea Road, which opened last summer.
Mark Grumbach, who came from the Trader Joe's in New York's Union Square to manage the first Joe's in Charlotte, will manage the new store.
The Metropolitan retail center, which replaced the old Midtown Square on South Kings Drive, has been taking shape steadily since Target and the Home Depot Design Center opened across the street last fall and Marshall's is slated to open Thursday morning. Best Buy and Staples also have opened. William-Sonoma's upscale furniture store West Elm and Modern Salon & Spa are still to come.
