Who knew you could find a world-class restaurant in a remote location like Walla Walla, Wash.? Saffron bills itself as Mediterranean, but my wood-grilled hanger Kobe beef steak with wild mushrooms was as good as I've ever had in a New York-style steakhouse. The creativity of the menu selections is unexpected and appreciated – items such as “free form boar lasagna with chestnuts” or “skate wing with parsnips and fabulous flatbreads.” And since the region is known for its wines, Saffron's wine selection is also beyond compare. Most you've never heard of, so ask for a recommendation.
