Matthews baker takes home the cornbread crown

Baker Andria Gaskins of Matthews took home the cast-iron crown as the winner of the National Cornbread Cook-Off, held in late April in South Pittsburg, Tenn. Sponsored by Martha White and Lodge Cast Iron, the contest also included $5,000 and a stainless steel gas range. Gaskins’ recipe, Roasted Tomato and Bacon Cobbler, used the flavors of a traditional tomato pie topped with cornbread flavored with bacon and sun-dried tomato. Kathleen Purvis

James Beard Awards

moving to Chicago in 2015

The James Beard Foundation announced Tuesday that its famous awards gala, which recognizes chefs and restaurants, will be held in Chicago next May. The foundation will keep its offices in New York, in the Greenwich Village townhouse once owned by the late James Beard, an early food-world personality. The foundation’s Book, Broadcast and Journalism awards, held separately, will stay in New York. KP

Pasta & Provisions, What’s Your Beef open new spots

Two Charlotte food stores are adding outlets in the uptown area. In early June, the Ballantyne butcher shop What’s Your Beef will take over the space in the 7th Street Public Market that had been Meat & Fish Co. And Pasta & Provisions has opened a space in the Atherton Market at South Boulevard and Tremont Avenue. Both stores will keep their original locations. KP
