Sam Talbot heads Macy’s grill event

Macy’s at Northlake is the place Saturday for the “Sizzle Showdown” semifinal of the Great American Grilling Guru competition, hosted by Cat Cora and Charlotte-raised chef Sam Talbot. Three contestants will compete for a slot in the finals June 28 in New York, where the grand prize includes $10,000. The showdown starts at 1 p.m. in the Macy’s parking lot, 6845 Northlake Mall Drive.

Enter your salsa in showdown

The Davidson Farmer’s Market needs entries for the 5th annual Salsa Showdown on July 26. You have to make the salsa with ingredients at the market that day, including tomatoes, peppers, onions, tomatillos, corn, peaches and garlic. Beer festival has N.C. focus

North Carolina ties are the focus of the State of Origin Beer Fest on June 14 in Morganton. The breweries not only have to be from North Carolina, but they also have to use state-sourced ingredients. Charlotte’s Birdsong, NoDa and Triple C breweries are among the 20 breweries expected. Tickets are $35 and hours are 3-7:30 p.m. Details: www.fontaflora.com/festival. KP

Meals on Wheels initiative

Charlotte author Leanne Ely of Savingdinner.com has been named to head a new initiative of Meals on Wheels, the program that supports senior nutrition programs. Ely will take a 20-city bus tour for Meals’ “Take Back the Dinner Table” campaign, which targets getting families to eat healthful, wholesome meals together. KP
