Observer wins 3 national awards for food coverage

Observer food editor Kathleen Purvis won first place for Best Food Column nationwide and first place for Best Newspaper Food Feature from The Association of Food Journalists.

Purvis’ column entries covered Paula Deen, cooking in summer, and cooking with chicken feet. Nancy Leson of the Seattle Times won second and Joe Yonan of the Washington Post won third.

The Observer placed second for Best Newspaper Food Coverage in its circulation category. Judges cited the section’s mix of profiles, recipes and how-to stories, and gave praise for photography, graphics and design. First place in that category went to the San Antonio Express-News.

The national organization for food writers, restaurant reviewers and food editors announced the winners of its annual awards last week in Memphis, Tenn.

The Observer’s sister paper, The (Raleigh) News & Observer, edited by Andrea Weigl, won first place for best section in its circulation category.
