Feast here awhile: Beer, pies and bacon cheese toast

▪ Winter is waning and emerald is springing up. St. Patrick’s Day is next Tuesday, so stock up on Guinness and tuck into a few hearty dishes made with Irish beers.

▪ Celebrate the art of the pie. Tara Jensen of Smoke Signals Baking in Marshall came to Charlotte last weekend to teach two informal classes on stone-ground flour and pie crust. Read my column on her, and then watch a video I made with the help of columnist Jennifer Lover. Mmmm, pies.

▪ Are you having people over anytime soon? Thanks to Ruth Reichl, I have a dead-simple appetizer. Say “cheese bacon toast,” people.
