I'll Bite

Wait - Wesley Crusher is old enough to drink?

Wil Wheaton has grown up, oh, 20 years or so, since his days on “Star Trek: Next Generation.”

OK, for some of us, actor Wil Wheaton will always be either young Mr. Crusher from “Star Trek: Next Generation,” or the earnest brown-eyed kid from “Stand By Me.” (Yeah, those leeches. Who can forget the leeches?)

He has grown up, by, oh, 20 years or so (he’s now 43), and these days he has appeared on “Big Bang Theory,” and gotten active on the Internet, including being open about his struggles with depression. He apparently also has become a fan of craft brewing. Which led him to Foothills Brewing of Winston-Salem. He’s become a fan of beers like their cult-favorite Sexual Chocolate, a Russian Imperial Stout so popular that lines form to snap up the limited yearly release.

Wheaton and his wife, Anne, also are supports of animal protection causes. So when Foothills started a contest to find rescue dogs to feature on the labels of their monthly IPAs, Wheaton entered his own rescue pit bulls, Seamus and Marlowe. Now, the July Foothills IPA will feature two loveable faces, Seamus and Marlowe Wheaton. In exchange, Foothills will make a donation to the Pasadena animal center.

With so many child actors facing bumpy lives in adulthood, it’s nice to see Wheaton doing good work off the screen as well. So, if you grab a bottle of Foothills July IPA, remember to say, Make it so, Mr. Crusher. Engage.
