Magazine scene: Modern Bride helps the groom get in on wedding planning

GROOM HIM

Wedding planning is usually left to the girls. I mean, you have been dreaming about this day since you were 5 years old, right? But if you're ready for your groom to lend a helping hand, September/October's Modern Bride has tips to get him in on the action.

— Embed tasks. The writer's fiancee got his best man to take him to a baseball game, and then subtly suggested they go get fitted for suits on the way.

— Keep it simple. Get him invested by starting off with small, simple tasks — preferably ones he'll enjoy, like choosing the bar menu. Then, when it comes time to tackle bigger decisions, he'll already be in too deep.

— Make it a competition. What do guys love more than competition? Casually mention how a friend's husband was able to get a great deal on a limo, and see if he's up for the challenge.

— Motivation. Gifts, otherwise known as bribes, are always an option.

— Keep it quiet. Most husbands might not want their friends to know they were so vocal about flower arrangements, or other “girly” planning items. Make a deal that when asked, you did it all.

— Make it fun. Registering these days can be done online, or in a store with fun electronic guns.

FUN FACT

We're not so sure these are related, but researchers from the University of Denver show that couples that live in cities with pro baseball teams are up to 28 percent less likely to get divorced than those who don't, as reported in Self's September issue.

RETRO RELAXATION

If you and your partner are tired of the same old “dinner and a movie” routine, September's Family Circle offers up a throwback suggestion: drive-in movie theaters. Sure, some of them may not play the up-to-date fare some of the local cinemas have, but a change of atmosphere can be good. So revist your past at one of more than 400 drive-ins across the country. Here is a sample:

— Bengies Drive-In Theatre, Baltimore, Md.

— Shankweiler's Drive-In Theatre, Orefield, Pa.

— Swap Shop, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

— Best Western Movie Manor, Monte Vista, Colo.
