Art therapy for brain function

Art educator Lela Kometiani will lead a free program, “Art Therapy for Brain Power: The Effects of Art Therapy on Cognitive Function,” Jan. 13 at the Ivey Memory Wellness Day Center, 6030 Park South Drive. The program, for adults experiencing Alzheimer’s disease and other memory loss, will be offered twice, from 2-3:30 p.m. and from 6-7:30 p.m. Register: 704-909-2070. Care for loved ones is available during the workshop.

Single-payer health plan

Dr. Oliver Fein, a past president of Physicians for a National Health Program, will give a free talk – “Health Care Reform: ACA vs. Single Payer?” – from 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, 2929 Selwyn Ave. The talk is sponsored by Health Care Justice-North Carolina. Fein is a professor of clinical medicine and public health at the Weill Cornell Medical College.

Support for mental health

The Charlotte chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will hold a free program, “Get to Know NAMI Charlotte,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 31 at Myers Park Baptist Church, Shalom Hall, 1900 Queens Road. The group will announce a new partnership with the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Details: 704-807-3267.
