When I hear the word "makeover" I can’t help but reminisce (and cringe) about my failed attempts at the makeup counter in middle school getting a makeover. The awkward, clumsy blue eye shadow, the clown-like circles of red rouge. Not at all natural.
And years later, when the term "mommy makeover" crossed my path it instinctively sounded, well, kind of unnatural to me as well. Babies wreak havoc on moms’ bodies, right? It’s just part of the deal….you have a baby, you lose your body.
Not so says Charlotte mother Lorrie McClaren. After a 75-pound weight gain during her twin pregnancy, McClaren just couldn’t get back to her pre-baby body. She worked hard, ate right, and exercised well, but became increasingly disheartened. Although she was not comfortable with her post-baby body, she kept thinking she could do it on her own - so she just kept trying.
Fast forward a few years and McClaren decided to do something about it. Really do something about it. Her philosophy…if you can feel good in your own body and someone can help you get there, then why wait? With a visit to Dr. Kevin Smith at Charlotte Plastic Surgery, she took the steps needed to have a "Mommy Makeover" - a tummy tuck, breast lift, and liposuction. The surgery, which she calls "life-changing" also removed the stretch marks from her stomach and added curves to her shape, all with minimal scarring.
Was she nervous? Somewhat. Was she determined? Yes. And ultimately, was she happy? A resounding yes. McClaren weighed the risks and the benefits, she openly discussed the procedure, her expectations, and her hopes with Dr. Smith, friends, family, and previous patients. And now, at age 41, she is able to do something she has never done before - wear a bikini.
McClaren's advice to anyone considering a Mommy Makeover:
Get support. While state-of the-art procedures and technologies have decreased the recovery process and post-surgery downtime, the support of her husband, parents, and friends made a big difference.
Reach your ideal weight first. A Mommy Makeover is not a miracle solution. The best results will be seen when you get within a weight range you want to maintain. McClaren has happily kept her post-surgery results for 11 years.
Keep your expectations realistic. Perfection is not possible. And surgery is not a one size fits all situation, so knowing what you want and what you can realistically expect is crucial.
Get it done as soon as possible. McClaren says her only regret is not having the procedure done sooner. When we feel good, we look good and when we look good, we feel good. And what could be more natural than that?
